The original B-17G "Nine-0-Nine," named for the last three digits of her serial number, 42-31909, flew 140 combat missions during World War II, a record for the Eighth Air Force. The aircraft was armed with 13 50-caliber machine guns and could carry up to 8,000 pounds of bombs. After the war, the original "909" returned to the US, was placed in storage in Arizona, and eventually scrapped. Subsequently, the Collings Foundation purchased a B-17Gs that had not been sent overseas. Interesting fact: It was the Collings Foundation "Nine-0-Nine" that appeared at many airshows.
