Lt. A Raymond Brooks was stationed at an airfield in eastern France when the U.S. Army Air Service assigned him to fly a French-built Spad XIII biplane. As a fighter, the Spad XIII was already renowned, and Brooks only added to its mystique. He called the plane Smith IV, a subtle reference to his sweetheart and future wife. She attended Smith College, and it was the fourth plane to carry that name. Brooks shot down six enemies in the plane, and other pilots shot down five more. The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum now owns Smith IV.
